Tuesday: 5 Things to watch for in 2024

101st episode special edition; Five themes for 2024, including rate cuts coming in US, Europe & Australia (in November), but not NZ; Australian incomes to rebound after tax cut; Gold set for new highs

In our special 101st episode edition, we pick out the five big themes for 2024.

5 themes for 2024

  1. Rate cuts are expected in the United States, Europe and Australia in 2024. A tax cut in Australia will help boost growth and incomes in the second half of 2024, along with an RBA cut likely from November, ANZ Head of Australia Economics Adam Boyton says.

  2. Australian employment is expected to remain resilient in 2024 with employers hoarding workers, says ANZ Australia Senior Economist Catherine Birch.

  3. Australian household finances are expected to muddle through 2024 before a tax cut and a late 2024 rate cut start to improve real incomes and savings, says ANZ Australia Senior Economist Adelaide Timbrell.

  4.  ANZ New Zealand Senior Economist Miles Workman sees the RBNZ holding the cash rate at 5.5% right through 2024.

  5. ANZ Commodity Strategist Soni Kumari sees an initial dip from record-highs for gold in Q1 of 2024, before falling US real yields and central bank buying boost it to new record highs of US$2,200/oz by late 2024.

Cheers
