Monday: Lending to Australian housing investors hits 10-year high

Lending to Australian residential property investors jumps in October; China's economic signals mixed; India reports 8.2% GDP growth, but deflators an issue; Maddy Dunk analyses strong housing lending

Lending to rental property investors in Australia surges to its fastest growth rate in a decade. China’s economy is showing mixed signals. And India posts a very fast GDP growth number.

In our Deep-Dive interview, ANZ Australia Economist Maddy Dunk analyses the surge in lending to rental property investors in October.

5 things to know in 5 minutes:

  1. China’s purchasing manager surveys for manufacturing and services showed mixed signals in November, says ANZ Economist Vicky Xiao Zhou.

  2. Vicky says policymakers in China will be focused on how consumers are feeling, and spending.

  3. India reported a much-stronger-than-expected GDP growth figure of 8.2% in the September quarter from a year ago. ANZ Economist Dhiraj Nim wonders though about the data.

  4. Dhiraj says the deflators used in the data may be off.

  5. Dhiraj says the Reserve Bank of India will have to consider the broader picture suggesting growth isn’t quite as strong as 8%.

Cheers,

Bernard.
